The Herschell Carrousel Factory Museum

Of the 148 antique, hand-carved wooden carousels still in existence in the United States and Canada today, 71 were manufactured in North Tonawanda in one of the four Herschell companies. The Allan Herschell Company had a major influence on the development of the American amusement ride industry, where this influence continues to be felt.

The Allan Herschell Company, the most prolific maker of carousels, specialized in producing portable machines which could be used by traveling carnival operators. The company produced over 3,000 hand carved wooden carousels. Each hand-carved wooden carousel featured striking yet simple horses.

Lewiston, NY

Not far from Niagara Falls is the quaint village of Lewiston, NY. Home to a number of locally owned restaurants and shops – this small town was once voted one of the best small towns in America! Walk up and down Center St to find something everyone’s tastebuds will enjoy. Then head down to the waterfront for a beautiful view of the Niagara River.  Don’t forget to check out the calendar of events to see what else is going on!

Lockport Locks (Lockport, NY)

Much remains the same on the Erie Canal today as it was in the 1800’s. Hand-dug to connect the Hudson River with the Niagara River, the 363-mile Grand Old Erie Canal is truly a great engineering feat. Originally, 83 stone locks overcame the 571-foot difference in the level between the rivers. Enlarged in the early 1900’s, now 35 locks allow larger vessels to travel across New York State.

Experience a unique 2-hour cruise which includes “locking through” and being raised the 49 ft. elevation of the Niagara Escarpment (the same one that creates Niagara Falls) in the only double set of locks on the Erie Canal. You will pass under bridges that raise straight up, see water cascade over Lockport’s famous “Flight of Five” 1840’s locks, and travel through the solid walls of the “rock cut” as your Coast Guard licensed captain describes the architecture, sights, and folklore along the way.

Niagara Aerospace Museum

Preserving Western New York’s Aviation and Aerospace History. The museum is located in the old terminal building at the Niagara Falls International Airport.

Old Fort Niagara

The history of Old Fort Niagara spans more than 300 years. The fort was occupied by three nations: France, Great Britain, and the United States. Located at the mouth of the Niagara River, the fort controlled access to the Great Lakes and the westward route to the heartland of the continent. Visitors to the fort today will see the oldest buildings in the Great Lakes region, living history programs, exhibits, and special events.
