Underground-RailroadFreedom Crossing, Lewiston, New York

Every year, thousands of students read the popular book, Freedom Crossing, by Margaret Goff Clark (1913-2003).  The story involves the Underground Railroad which was a secret network of trails and homes that helped slaves from the Southern United States escape to Canada in the early to mid-1800s.

The story takes place in Lewiston, New York, which was the final stop for escaping slaves from the South.  Once they reached Lewiston, they only had to take a boat ride across the Niagara River to Canada, and freedom!  But it wasn’t easy.  There were slave catchers and bounty hunters who were hired to capture the slaves and take them back to the South.  It was very treacherous for the slaves and the volunteer citizens who helped them.

Lewiston’s citizens hated slavery and many of them volunteered to help smuggle thousands of slaves across the border.  There was a code of silence and the people of Lewiston never trusted or spoke to outsiders about their secret activities.  It is estimated that thousands of slaves were smuggled through Lewiston and made their way to the Canadian shore and freedom.

Herschell-Carrousel-HorseThe Herschell Carrousel Factory Museum

Of the 148 antique, hand-carved wooden carousels still in existence in the United States and Canada today, 71 were manufactured in North Tonawanda in one of the four Herschell companies. The Allan Herschell Company had a major influence on the development of the American amusement ride industry, where this influence continues to be felt.

The Allan Herschell Company, the most prolific maker of carousels, specialized in producing portable machines which could be used by traveling carnival operators. The company produced over 3,000 hand carved wooden carousels. Each hand-carved wooden carousel featured striking yet simple horses.

A major employer in the community, the Allan Herschell Company had a worldwide reputation for quality rides. Carousels from this company were shipped throughout the United States and Canada, as well as to all parts of the world, including South Africa, India, Tahiti, and Mexico.

lockport-locksLockport Locks (Lockport, NY)

Much remains the same on the Erie Canal today as it was in the 1800’s. Hand-dug to connect the Hudson River with the Niagara River, the 363-mile Grand Old Erie Canal is truly a great engineering feat. Originally, 83 stone locks overcame the 571-foot difference in the level between the rivers. Enlarged in the early 1900’s, now 35 locks allow larger vessels to travel across New York State.

Experience a unique 2-hour cruise which includes “locking through” and being raised the 49 ft. elevation of the Niagara Escarpment (the same one that creates Niagara Falls) in the only double set of locks on the Erie Canal. You will pass under bridges that raise straight up, see water cascade over Lockport’s famous “Flight of Five” 1840’s locks, and travel through the solid walls of the “rock cut” as your Coast Guard licensed captain describes the architecture, sights, and folklore along the way.

Marble Orchard Ghost Walks

Lurking behind Lewiston’s cheerful disposition lies an impressive past of creepy events, restless spirits and haunted buildings. The Marble Orchard Ghost Walks are one of WNY’s most popular autumn tourist destinations, unmatched when it comes to presenting both historical truths and ghostly legends. The walks are a great way to introduce visitors, school children and even long time residents to Lewiston’s rich and exciting history.

Fort-Niagara-Light-HouseLight houses on the Great Lakes Seaway Trail

The Great Lakes Seaway Trail shoreline is home to a fascinating collection of 28 historic lighthouses and 2 modern replicas. America’s history was shaped by the role these lights played as active beacons. In fact, some are still at work guiding ships traveling Lake Erie, the Niagara River, Lake Ontario, and the St. Lawrence River. The lights are an important part of the Great Lakes Seaway Trail region’s maritime heritage and serve as prized local landmarks. Click this link for descriptions of these lighthouses and a map.
